The Importance of Mold Remediation After Water Damage

12/16/2024 (Permalink)

Various factors can cause flooding; issues with plumbing systems or inclement weather are known to cause flooding throughout a property. When a building floods, the first goal of any property is to handle the water damage cleanup. However, one thing that goes overlooked is the importance of mold remediation.

What Is Mold Remediation?

Mold remediation refers to the process of removing mold from a property. Often, when mold growth is excessive, it is more complex than just cleaning the mold off surfaces. In most cases, the mold has permanently damaged the material it has grown on, which requires both the mold and the surface it grew on to be removed. This is the process of mold remediation.

When Does Mold Need To Be Remediated?

If a small amount of mold is found growing on a surface, a mold remediator might recommend simply cleaning the mold of the material (depending on the material). The problem occurs when a large amount of mold is on a surface. Remediation is often necessary after a property is flooded. Large amounts of water can cause floors, walls, carpets, and furniture to become waterlogged. When something is waterlogged, the excess moisture can lead to excessive mold growth in a short period.

How Can You Prevent Mold Growth

When a property floods, the most important factor is how quickly you react. Your first goal should always be your safety and that of any other occupants. Your second goal should be working with water damage cleanup teams. If your plumbing system is causing water damage, it must be shut off quickly. If the flood is caused by weather, you should wait for the storm out. Regardless, once water can be stopped from entering your property, it must be removed. The longer water sits on a property, the more likely you will eventually have a mold problem. Mold quickly grows in areas with a lot of moisture, warmth, and darkness. Mold growth can also be exponential after water damage. As mold grows, it can release more spores relative to the surface area it covers, which means the affected area can proliferate.
